JR Ewing, a central character, was shot in the final episode of the third season, and the cliffhanger left viewers wondering who was responsible. The phrase became iconic, and the question "Who shot JR?" became a national obsession. The mystery wasn't fully revealed until the fourth season, and it turned out that Kristin Shepard, JR's sister-in-law, was the one who shot him (spoilers).
